Little Molas Lake is at 10,000 ft. elevation a few miles south of Silverton CO. Today the road to the camping area remained closed because of snow so it was a great day for a hike. Rosie, Peach, and Lily enjoy the view.

Rosie, Peach, and Lily stop along the Jud Wiebe Trail. They are in aspen forest just below 10,000 ft. elevation. The trail is a 2.2 mile loop from Tomboy Road to Aspen Street in Telluride CO.

This rock is on the hillside above the highest portion of the trail. The yellow box contains dog biscuits.

Cornet Creek is at the end of the trail above Aspen Street. It is a good spot to cool off after a hike.

Turner is a 14 month old huskie. She is a recent addition to the pack and was adopted from the Humane Society of Elmore County. She is very friendly and enjoys chasing the cats. She pulls well and appears to have great sled dog potential. Welcome to the pack, Turner.

These puppies are seven weeks old and are posing in the strawberry patch. They are mixed breed and their mother is a Pomeranian-Chihuahua. They currently weigh three pounds each and are unlikely to be larger than 15 lbs. at maturity. They are staying at our home until they are large enough for adoption. They will be available next month from the Humane Society of Elmore County.

With the recent warm weather the snow is melting rapidly. There was still enough left on the Bear Creek trail in Telluride last week for some skijoring. Peach, Lily, and Rosie take a break before heading back to town.

Lily has a new X-back harness from Black Ice Dog Sledding.

This photo of Rosie and Peach was taken a few days earlier on the trail to Andrews Lake.

Rosie, Lily, and Peach stop at the chocolate shop on Fir Street in Telluride. Their mistress likes the selection at this shop. Chocolate is toxic to dogs (and cats) because of the presence of theobromine, a methylxanthine which dogs do not metabolize as quickly as humans. It affects the heart and nervous system. When preparing treats for dogs use carob as a substitute for chocolate. "White" chocolate does not contain theobromine and can be used as frosting on dog biscuits. Yum!

And they're off!

A good time was had by all.

The Boykin Spaniel is a waterfowl hunting breed that originated in Beaufort, South Carolina. It excels at jumping from pirogues to fetch fowl. It is small enough that it is known as "The dog that won't rock the boat." Picture above is Finn, our neighbor.

Rosie is also a Boykin Spaniel. Instead of waterfowl she fetches tennis balls.

Lily, Rosie, and Peach check out this tracked vehicle parked in downtown Silverton. The Red Bull free style back country skiing competition is being held this week. That's Kendall Mountain in the background. The Cold Rush competition is being held at Silverton Mountain, six miles up the road.

This vehicle has a Texas license plate, of course.

This weekend there was a skijor competition in Silverton. The race course was on Blair Street and the jumps alternated between high and low. The skier participants had to negotiate the jumps and snatch a plastic ring from a pole.

Rosie checked out one of the large jumps that topped out at four feet.

In a few days these puppies will be eight weeks old and headed for the spay/neuter clinic. They are quiet, friendly, and will be looking for a home. They will be available for adoption through http://www.elmorehumane.org and we hope that they find good homes. They are just over five pounds each and will probably weigh twenty pounds at maturity.

The puppies are seven weeks old and have outgrown their transport bucket. They weigh five pounds each and can barely fit in this bucket. Compare this to the photo posted on January 6.

For now they are being carried outside in this larger bucket. They are almost large enough to go to the spay/neuter clinic.

These puppies are now six weeks old and weigh four pounds each. This bucket is how they get from their crate out to the yard. They are weaned and are now eating a mixture of dry and canned food. We anticipate that in two weeks they will be large enough to go to the spay/neuter clinic and then be ready for adoption.

Flyball is a competitive dog sport which originated in California in the 1970s. Teams of four dogs compete to pull a tennis ball from a fly ball box and then return it through a series of jumps. Rosie has a fly ball box and some jumps set up in her yard.

Rosie heads for the fly ball box. A tennis ball is fastened to a Velcro strip near the top of the box.

She eyes the target and prepares to retrieve it.

Rosie has retrieved the tennis ball and is bringing it back through the jump poles. For more information about flyball see http://flyballdogs.com .

Merry Christmas from Sassy the Chihuahua. She was brought to the Humane Society of Elmore County a few weeks ago with four puppies. She and the puppies (shown on the posting of December 19) are camped out in our home. The puppies's teeth are starting to erupt so Sassy will probably quit nursing them in a few days. Then the puppies can eat dry and canned food until they are large enough to put up for adoption.

Merry Christmas to all from Deli and Peach.

Lily and Rosie also wish everyone a great holiday. May Santa bring everyone lots of biscuits!

Lily is seven years old so we had a party. The cake is a new recipe for the pack. It is a banana cake with no sweeteners added. Health food! The icing is made with bananas and carob.

Rosie, Deli, Peach, and Lily posed patiently for the photo and then cake was served.

These puppies are four weeks old and are staying at our home until they are mature enough to be put up for adoption. Their mother is a chihuahua and their father is a traveling salesman.
They are barely able to stand up and so it was easy to pose them for this photo. They are still nursing and will start on puppy food in a few days. They will be available for adoption through the Humane Society of Elmore County.

Peach and Lily went a few feet up Black Bear Pass and their paws post-holed through the snow. This is not good for their legs and is a risk factor for cruciate ligament tear, so they came back and went for a walk elsewhere. This photo was taken at 11,000 ft. elevation. The pass connects Highway 550 north of Silverton with the town of Telluride.

The total accumulation is less than a foot so avalanche danger is moderate.

When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping. In this case Lily and Peach went to PETCO in Montrose Colorado to pick up some chow. If you are in the area please note that this coming weekend December 3-4 the Montrose PETCO will host an adopt-a-thon in collaboration with the local humane shelter.

A 44 lb. bag of IAMS dry food should last us for a few weeks.

The friendly lady at the checkout counter gave us complimentary biscuits from the "TREATS" bar. What a great shopping trip!

Our pack celebrates Thanksgiving in the traditional manner with dog biscuits made of ground turkey.

Peach and Deli have volunteered for quality control duty to check out this year's batch of biscuits. Deli is a clothes horse and is wearing a coat purchased in Paris, France.

This biscuit mold came in handy. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
